Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Crystal Palace

The tail-end of the Premier League season has witnessed both resurgences and downfalls of certain teams, and the upcoming clash against Wolves and Crystal Palace features the types of outfits on opposite ends of the spectrum.

The Eagles started to soar when they defeated Liverpool, and they’ve haven’t touched the ground ever since. Glasner and his men are poised to finish their top-flight campaign unbeaten in their last seven—not unless Wolves can halt them in their tracks, that is.

Gary O’Neil and his Wolves braved a rollercoaster of a season in the Premier League, having stretches of brilliance and moments of struggle to boot. Winning just one out of their last five, O’Neil and the rest of his outfit are keen on finishing the season on a strong note, ideally with wins over the scorching outfits, Crystal Palace and Liverpool.

Talking Points

The Eagles are soaring

Don’t look now, but Crystal Palace are one of the hottest teams in the Premier League. The Eagles are soaring, unbeaten since April 14, and winning four of their last five. They started their tail-end run with a pivotal win against Liverpool that sorely hurt the Reds’ title run alongside Manchester City and Arsenal.

Then, with a bounce in their steps, Oliver Glasner and his men proceeded to show their Sunday best against the Hammers with a 5-2 victory at Selhurst Park, where Jean-Philippe Mateta showcased two Premier League 2024 highlights to shut the door on the visiting West Ham United.

They continued their dominance against Newcastle and, with the help of Jeffrey Schlupp, levelled against Fulham at Craven Cottage. But Crystal Palace’s magnum opus of the season came against the lacklustre Manchester United earlier this week.

The Red Devils were the Premier League 2024 odds favourites coming into the Matchday 36 clash, but Olise and the rest of his teammates quickly showed why their outfit shouldn’t ever be underestimated.

Mitchell and Mateta scored one goal apiece, while Michael Olise delivered a brace to complete the onslaught at Selhurst Park. Not to mention Palace’s man between the sticks, Henderson, kept a clean sheet to make their victory even sweeter, ending the fray with a 4-0 score line.

Now, with two games left in the season, the Eagles can move up a couple more spots in the Premier League standings, and they’ll have a good opportunity to do so when they visit the ailing Wolves.

Can Wolves muster up a top-10 finish?

Can Wolverhampton Wanderers end the Premier League season on a high note?
Wolverhampton Wanderers boss Gary O’Neil reacts during a Premier League match against Newcastle United in October 2023

Wolverhampton were a solid mid-table team throughout the 2023–24 campaign, even finding themselves above notable teams at some parts of the season. But their recent struggles have forced them to slip down to the 12th spot on the top-flight table.

Their aspirations to finish the season in a competitive seeding were halted by a series of injuries and key pieces going on international duty during crucial phases of their campaign.

Wolves have been able to accumulate just four points in their last five matches, and the fact that they were the recipients of Erling Haaland’s four-goal masterpiece last weekend at Etihad Stadium definitely encapsulated Wolverhampton’s recent woes. Talking about kicking someone when they’re already down.

However, Wolves can still end the season on a good note as they try to win their last two games against Crystal Palace and Liverpool. Though, it wouldn’t be a walk in the park for the pack, as Liverpool are one of the most formidable teams in the Premier League, and, as stated above, Crystal Palace have found their wings late in the season.

History

These teams have posted neck-and-neck results over two decades of skirmishes. Since 2005, Wolves and the Eagles have faced each other each other 24 times. In those games, Wolves have won nine, while Crystal Palace are right there with 10 wins with five tallied draws to boot.

Their last matchup gave football fans a five-goal thriller at Selhurst Park, where the home team successfully fended off the visiting Wolves 3-2.

That match was the first time since 2013 that their total goals exceeded three, as both teams are almost always in competitive form when facing off against each other.

In recent form, Palace are looking like they’re chasing the Premier League title with the way they’ve been playing these past few weeks. They’ve been unstoppable in their last five matches, with Fulham posing as the only close call with a 1-1 draw.

Meanwhile, Wolves are still trying to find their form late in the season, especially in their last five outings. (W1, D1, L3).

Betting Tip

The odds at SBOTOP suggest that this match at Molineux Stadium will be an all-out dog fight, as neither outfit boasts a significant advantage in their prices. The visiting Eagles are the slight favourites at 2.36, which, in my opinion, poses tremendous value for punters to consider. Wolves on the other hand, despite their recent woes, are right there at 2.68 with a draw price of 3.29.

Palace are in the best form of their season, and to have them at 2.36 against an ailing Wolves outfit seems like a no-brainer to me.
